I can understand that the need to know it might be mandatory. But there is little need for you to actually own it.

You have the choice of Avid or Premiere Pro. Why in the hell is FCP mandatory, when it is (at best) on par with Premiere, and well below the grade of Avid? Unless you work at an edit house that just happens to only run FCP for whatever convoluted reason.

Actually, PC's are also used for video editing on a rather large scale. Hell, my college is buying at least 5 new computers for their editing suites in the broadcasting section. They've opted to go with PC's outfitted with the Adobe Production Premium Suite, rather than Macs.
The use of a computer in the editing world is per edit-house. There is no mantra saying that Mac has any exclusive rights to this field. At all.

Not even that. I play with the macs down in the editing lounge in the broadcasting section at my college. The OS is....meh. Not terrible, but nothing to brag about.

It's not always on the inside what matters but on the outside...what I'm trying to say is that some people prefer a PC while some people might prefer a Mac it's all about how your body and mind feels about the whole thing overall, like who cares if the Mac only has a 500GB HD and 2GB of RAM and the PC has double that for the same price??? IT HAS A KICK ASS OPERATING SYSTEM & I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT .

so you own a PC to be a capitalist but then go eat MC Donald's or shop at old navy and become a consumerist again. Consumerism is everywhere it is how the world survives apple just had better ideas how to market it, wether its better or not they get people to buy it, its common marketing.

I'm not here to argue but can't see your point, Everybody in which I have ever know that was a gamer used a counsel. Walk into any ad or recording studio and you will find that all of them are using macs. That's just the way it is. You can also walk into any large scale business such as insurance companies and find all pcs. Macs are meant as a home computer, for casual use for families, and other things like that. Pcs are meant for large companies that do spreadsheets, charts, and stuff you need to run a business.
