NASA's eyes on the Earth: A warming world - global temperature update ... piecing together the temperature puzzle. Each year, scientists at NASA'S Goddard Institute for Space Studies analyze global temperature data. The past year, 2009, tied as the second warmest year since global instrumental temperature records began 130 years ago. Worldwide, the mean temperature was 0.57°C (1.03°F) warmer than the 1951-1980 base period. And January 2000 to December 2009 came out as the warmest decade on record. • http://climate.nasa.gov/warmingworld --- 2009 was tied for the second warmest year in the modern record, a new NASA analysis of global surface temperature shows. The analysis, conducted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, also shows that in the Southern Hemisphere, 2009 was the warmest year since modern records began in 1880. Although 2008 was the coolest year of the decade, due to strong cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean, 2009 saw a return to near-record global temperatures. The past year was only a fraction of a degree cooler than 2005, the warmest year on record, and tied with a cluster of other years — 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007 1998 and 2007 — as the second warmest year since recordkeeping began. "There's always an interest in the annual temperature numbers and on a given year's ranking, but usually that misses the point," said James Hansen, the director of GISS. "There's substantial year-to-year variability of global temperature caused by the tropical El Niño-La Niña cycle. But when we average temperature over five or ten years to minimize that variability, we find that global warming is continuing unabated." January 2000 to December 2009 was the warmest decade on record. Throughout the last three decades, the GISS surface temperature record shows an upward trend of about 0.2°C (0.36°F) per decade. Since 1880, the year that modern scientific instrumentation became available to monitor temperatures precisely, a clear warming trend is present, though there was a leveling off between the 1940s and 1970s. The near-record temperatures of 2009 occurred despite an unseasonably cool December in much of North America. High air pressures in the Arctic decreased the east-west flow of the jet stream, while also increasing its tendency to blow from north to south and draw cold air southward from the Arctic. This resulted in an unusual effect that caused frigid air from the Arctic to rush into North America and warmer mid-latitude air to shift toward the north. "Of course, the contiguous 48 states cover only 1.5 percent of the world area, so the U.S. temperature does not affect the global temperature much,' said Hansen. In total, average global temperatures have increased by about 0.8°C (1.5°F) since 1880. "That's the important number to keep in mind," said Gavin Schmidt, another GISS climatologist. "In contrast, the difference between, say, the second and sixth warmest years is trivial since the known uncertainty — or noise — in the temperature measurement is larger than some of the differences between the warmest years." Decoding the Temperature Record: Climate scientists agree that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap incoming heat near the surface of the Earth and are the key factors causing the rise in temperatures since 1880, but these gases are not the only factors that can impact global temperatures. • http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/news/20100121/ . Look whos talking, you know you are part of the major smug and pollution driving cars 11 miles to the gallon. Like if you know you are gonna die because of fake global warming. Get this through your head, there is no proof smart one
natalalalia007 Says:
Are you kidding me? Are you oblivious of the fact that because of all of the pollution and waste on this plant, we are destroying this planet? Right in front of you is proof that there is global warming. You're just making excuses because you can't realize that you're part of the problem like all of us. I wonder if you're still going to think there isn't global warming when you grandchildren are all dead because of it.
XxDeltaSealxX Says:
There is no proof of global warming, like ice age, all that happened long time ago, it melted and stopped without these gases and, not much of these gases and pollution. This could just be one of those Earth periods that will change like ice age and others. Earth could be overheating, but might soon stop and end like those eras, periods, times in the past
AutoCrete Says:
Really? I guess I'll have to contact Sharp Solar about all of those solar panels I bought, Magnum Energy about that 4KW, 120/240 V pure sine wave inverter, Outback about that MX-60 charge controller and CD Technologies about the 32 batteries in my battery bank to get a full refund. I'm just guess that the 17 LED light bulbs in my house along with timers to turn off phantom loads account for nothing either. What have you done? My car insurance is mandatory here $561 and I don't insure my house.
jordtube Says:
your basing evidence on 1 small section of coastline. I've seen global evidence that makes you look oblivious to the whole issue.
jordtube Says:
excuse me but I'm pretty sure the scientists are doing their job as they are qualified to do. How would you like it if I started telling you how to do your job?
jordtube Says:
We pay thousands for insurance each year in case we crash our car or burn our house down on the smallest chance. Yet people like you refuse to invest 1 cent into renewable energy on the basis you reckon your more right that professional scientists. It makes no logic!!!!
jordtube Says:
or there only interested in what directly effects them or their family, not global issues that they can't change by themselves.
jordtube Says:
thats what this whole video is about. duhhh!!!

Today's progressive is tomorrows conservative.

Photosynthesis converts additional carbon dioxide back into active biology the fossil fuels last were in the Jurassic
RonaldEKemp Says:
And if you think about it there is no carbon footprint left because the gasses can change from one to another. There is no footprint left if this process continuously recycles. If carbon emissions are increasing then we must increase the number of plants/organisms which make O2. We should not be worried about the planet getting warmer but not being able to breath O2. Check the history of CO2 levels, they coincide with the reducing O2 levels. Earth's atmosphere eventually will be like Mars.
RonaldEKemp Says:
Every time CO2 is produced oxygen is removed. The total amount of gas in the atmosphere is a fixed amount, see law of conservation. Oxygen just takes on a different state. Could it be that it is not more carbon dioxide present in our atmosphere but less oxygen? Either way to turn this around we need to stop killing photosynthesis species, increase them to create a balance that works. Calculate the carbon emissions and counter it with photosynthesis. Don't cut down a tree, use hemp instead!
JonThm Says:
Global photosynthesis has resulted in a static level and carbon dioxide in the air for last two centuries
JonThm Says:
Photosynthesis has ensured there has been a static trace of carbon dioxide left in the air by photosynthesis for last two centuries. Global warming was fiction from nuclear power!
uRtESTICL3SrMINE Says:
the earth goes through so many chages. so what if its getting hotter every day. should cows stop shitting and should we all stop breathing so the earth can live? its lasted us for billions of years. why the hell is Gore saying the world is gonna die in a decade or so. we always hear about the hottest summers... what about the coldest winters? or the coldest spring? We have fluctuating climate..deal with it!
saltiman Says:
Yes the planet iw heating. Are we causing it? Maybe..I don't know. Do you guys really think we can save it? The world can't atop fighting with itself..there's no way we are going to "save" the planet..really its not going anywhere..its going to clean us off its surface. So really we're all afraid of dying
Xxplct49 Says:
what are all the possible theories for global warming?
Justpooinabush Says:
See, you go from denying that CO2 levels are changing to saying gas levels are always fluxuating! And there is a way to directly correlate this with humans, CO2 levels are the highest they have ever been, burning of fossil fuels have produced an insurmountable amount of CO2, the ozone layer is depleting because of the use of CFCs in aerosols which is letting more UV and cosmic radiation in. Countries all across the planet have united to tackle this, once again, I trust climate science over you.
DAUFwesChard Says:
There is no way to directly correlate this to Humans, the Gas levels in the atomsphere fluxuate all the time
Justpooinabush Says:
No, you should do some research, CO2 levels are measured by hundreds of stations scattered across 66 countries which all report the same rising trend. All of these measurements are performed by unaffiliated science organisations like universities. There is no way these results are erroneous. You can assert that there is no evidence for global warming all you want, but even organisations that used to refute global warming are now accepting it, but are challenging whether humans are the cause.
DAUFwesChard Says:
How would you measure it? It is constantly changing and is different in all parts of the world depending on the altitude, You should do some research, they are just guessing that the CO2 levels are higher, just like you are guessing that it is fact, there is no evidence for global warming whatsoever.
Justpooinabush Says:
What?! Ofcourse you can measure the levels of CO2 in the atmopshere, we know the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere from over millions of years ago, this is how the people who don't believe in global warming try to refute current claims on CO2 levels. You are saying the same people who are trying to prove global warming isn't a reality are wrong as well because there is no way of measuring CO2 levels? Do some research, use GOOGLE for heavens sake. Climate scientists are right. You aren't.
DAUFwesChard Says:
Go on like what?
DAUFwesChard Says:
There is no way to prove that ice caps are melting or CO2 levels have been rising, it is un measurable, I don't know where you get your facts, but there is no way to measure CO2 level. There is no evidence of anything you are saying and is not "DEMONSTRABLY true" I am denying it, provide me with evidence
