I think the Burmese dictator Than Shwe was bribed by the Chinese to sell away Burma's natural resources to China and perhaps even coerced by Peking to put down the Saffron revolution by force, i.e. shoot down the monks. China is very sensitive about Buddhist monks demonstrating on the streets (not to mention self-immolation!)
